Newspapers
Newspapers, in terms of raw data, are the most concise and substantial form of news. A single edition has all the info one needs to know with regards to international news, home news, sports and such for the day. Unfortunately, because of this same reason, it is also probably the most unjustly forsaken type of news. Most people do not realise this, but reading the newspaper requires some technique involving picking out relevant information. It is quite pointless (and tiring) to read an entire edition cover to cover, and attempting such is the reason why most people do not even bother with newspapers. Newspapers, regardless, are still too crucial to do away with, due to its tremendous advertising potential.
Channel NewsAsia
Televised news programmes are able to capitalise on their ability to visually and audibly engage their audience to bring across the news in a more vivid and impacting way than the newspaper can. The format, along with the scrolling news captions and latest updates, enables people to take in more information at a time than with newspapers - useful for people on the move. Televised news is also better than the newspaper due to the by-the-minute updates. Newspapers only publish anything that makes it by press time; anything else has to wait until tomorrow.
The only problem is that viewers are subject to the programme's format and capacity: if you want to hear about tennis updates, you have to sit through all the more important stuff before they reach that part. Also, being visually appealing may lead some channels to invoke certain feelings in the viewer that are analogous to the station's agenda, like how Fox News was regularly accused of siding the Bush Administration.
Fake News

Personally, my favourite type of news, where it is presented in a humourous way. Examples include The Daily Show, which reports on world events in an intentionally comedic way without distorting facts or publishing lies, and Today Now, which uses subtle humour and sarcasm to "report" fabricated stories based on real life events, more for the purpose to entertain than anything else. Such methods are useful in connecting with the younger generation and people who are thoroughly bored with the conventional news. Viewers will find it quite obvious as to what is fact and what is meant to be a joke, and through this method, awareness and some level of interest is drawn to these topics, as opposed to these people avoiding the regular news and sidestepping these issues altogether. The obvious drawback would be that some level of detail is sacrificed for the sake of humour, and that these programmes always run the risk of misinformation or defamation in the search for comedic material.
Personally, I feel that televised news is the most effective, in terms of currency, information transmission and convenience. However, all forms have their uses and drawbacks. So, which type of news media is the most effective?
I'll have to disagree with ya dude.
ReplyDeleteNews should be news as it is. Papers in my opinion is the most effective form of communication to the people because like you mentioned, people are allowed the freedom of selecting what information they would like to take in. Watching the news is just too tedious like a kid longing for that puppy in the window, and in this case, the tennis results. Ha.
Power to the people. (:
true, reporting news in a humourous way is useful in connecting with the youth (:
ReplyDeletebut i'm pretty sure not every kind of news can be reported this way! it would be so so wrong if there's a report on the sheer lost of lives in a humourous way :/
i personally feel that effectiveness of the type of news media would heavily rely on the genre of news to be reported (:
my personal opinion is that you cant believe everything you see from the tv, or news that you read from the newspaper. you mentioned that we need technique to pick out the relevant information from reading newspaper, the same goes for news that are reported on tv.
ReplyDeleteThe things they are showing are things that have been edited. my personal opinion is that if u were to see the whole video of what they have taken, or if u have seen the real thing when it happened, you would have different opinion.
those videos are edited to give you the impression that they(like CNA) want to give u. they would have deliberately cut out those things that are real, but not in line with the news they want to give people. so i'm quite skeptical about what's written on the newspaper, and things that are shown on the news.
i believe that you should read more, and see what's the difference in the news that are being reported, you will see a difference in the way they report it. facts are facts, they cant be changed, but the way you write it says alot about the way they report their news.
never believe totally in what people write or report. that's wad i believe in. :)
and i think televised news is most effective too!
Hey dude!
ReplyDeleteI think that presenting news in the form of humour encourages many who are uninterested in the news to start engaging themselves!
However like you said, it isn't really completely possible to remain objective or distort facts!
Furthermore, if we were to create humour for all sorts of news, it may be inappropriate! For example, you couldn't have used humour to report the death of a president or a Saint? It is either disrespectful or will cause an uproar!
I feel that news today, in any form, has a hint of bias. With the need/requirement to voice your opinion, or put forth your perspective, how is it possible to say that what is reported is completely objective?
Therefore, it would be wise and more appropriate to select, watch, hear, or read the news with your own discretion.
(And of course, try to be objective yourself!)

just passing by. for me, i dont usually have time to read the papers, so i prefer to watch the news on the tv, especially in the morning. just switch on the tv and listen to the news while you do your morning stuffs. lols
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I think you missed out the radio, magazines, and the internet as channels for news.
ReplyDeleteI found the 'fake news' part interesting. However, I thought that such sources may miscommunicate infomaton to the less educated, or less discerning, or to those that just read the headlines and walked away. Nonetheless, it's a rather humorous, albeit meaningless, source for news.
i dont really read the newspapers but i do watch the news on television and hear it on radio.
ReplyDeletei go onto their website too, to read it. i feel that watching news on TV is effective, to me, because there's visuals to accompany with it. it complements the whole news, giving you a wider range and understanding towards the news.
news on TV is also direct and more likely to be up to date. the newspapers print on in the wee hours of the morning, thus information could be backlogged, as new information could appear hours after the papers are printed and there's no way of re-printing them again.
hey hey, the idea of the IDEAL media is a lost cause because every media has its pros and cons. i'm sure you'll agree with me that the more available the media, the lesser its credibility ala INTERNET.
ReplyDeleteyet, those which are more trusted by its history and credibility is limited by its PRIMITIVITY. because traditional print such as newspapers lack the creativity and design that attracts viewers.
2 sides of a coin eh!

haha daily show is funny stuff! anyway i hate the regular news cuz its just to dry. what i like to do is watch stuff like the daily show and onion news network for the funny stories then look them up for real once my interest has been caught. mission accomplished for fake news eh?
ReplyDeletethe world is a lie and so is the news. fake news could be more real than real news. theyre just tellin us wat they wanna us to hear so well be quiet and go on with our lives and make all this money for the govenment. if you people ever found out wad the govenment was hidin under their basement youll know i aint makin this shit up.
ReplyDeleteShit, dude, some of these comments are effing hilarious! You know this anonymous guy? Anywho, I feel that we should never underestimate the power of the newspaper. It's still the most used form of mass media, and it's a great advertising machine. Plus, there's something about sitting at your dining table reading the papers and drinking coffee every morning. I know I sound like a old prude, but it's a nice feeling somehow. Y'know?
